20 18/09/04 They are saying that the Romford site is ideal and will only be minimum disruption to residents.

C.A.G. Reply:  Members of the Action Group visited the consultation unit today.  We were told that the Romford development would be one of the first areas of the whole project to be built.  If Crossrail goes ahead, the build in this area could begin as early as 2007 and will take 2 - 3 years to complete.  Building work on this scale will undoubtedly cause residents disruption.  How does one measure it?

19 18/09/04 As an answer to "Disheartened in Sheringham Ave" about the missing trees, I have lived in Sheringham Avenue for 22 years and can always remember the trees and have seen them grow to a great height. I believe they were birch trees and from my advantage point I could see 20+.  I asked questions and the answer I got was that it was routine maintainence.  I would also like to mention (sorry if I frighten anyone) but when the new post office was built we, in Sheringham Avenue, were invaded by Rats (not sure how other areas were effected). The council was called out to solve the problem.  I and a few others solved our problem with our cats and air rifles. I still have cats but alas no air rifle and the other problem solvers have moved away from here. Bob Sinfield
18 17/09/04 Friday the 17/09/04 came and I got to the Bar Mango at 12.05pm.  Being disabled I had to use my car and, being market day, I could not get as near as I would have liked, so I had to walk the rest of the way.  I spent about 20 minutes talking to the security guard assigned to this site and he was worried that he had the wrong venue so I gave him my copy of the flier with all the details on it (his boss kept phoning him to go back to the office if no one showed). About 1pm. I left to go to get something to eat and returned at about 1.30pm.  Still no sign, so I went into the bar (something I hate; dark and dingy) but no sign of Crossrail only patrons eating and drinking. I didn't speak to any one in there as who wants to be disturbed whilst eating? Although the Bar was busy, there were no signs out side telling residents about the Crossrail Mobile Unit, in fact nothing saying it was cancelled.  I finally left at 2pm.  If this is the type of commitment Crossrail show to the Residents of Romford and Chadwell Heath I'm Glad they don't organise Christmas.
As I sit here typing this I wonder if they did turn up but camouflaged.  Did any one from Chadwell Heath Find them ??????  Next Time put out signs, Crossrail, and if you turn up post some one on the door...............

C.A.G. Reply: Thank you for your e-mail regarding the Crossrail Consultation Unit.  I e-mailed Crossrail to get the exact location of the unit as the invitation just said Romford Town Centre.  At 3.30 this afternoon, a neighbour caught me and told me that the caravan was actually situated at the bottom of Romford market, outside the Co-Op Bank, by the copper sculpture.  I managed to get hold of James Ryan, the Crossrail representative at the unit, on his mobile phone.  He told me that he had sent people down to the original area to leaflet details of the change.  Having received your e-mail, I have rung him again and told him he needs to use an information board as well as people leafleting, as most of us walk past people handing out leaflets.  He has since phoned me back to confirm that this has now been done.  Can they not think for themselves?!  We have now sent the new details to all those who have registered for website updates.

17 17/09/04 As a Sheringham Avenue resident my property will back directly onto this proposed depot. Has anyone already noticed that about 12 very mature trees have been felled in this area already - can anyone shed any light if this is connected to the Crossrail proposal?  I think many of us residents have become a little confused with the various protests lately and some of the literature we have received in the post - unfortunately the debate has got a little political.  Can we all now get behind the Crossrail Action Group and unite as one against this.  Maybe C.A.G needs to organise a residents meeting so we can collectively assess the way forward. It seems that at present we are getting no clear answers from Crossrail - I'm sure that they believe we will become disheartened and give up the campaign.Excellent website - I'm sure it will further the campaign significantly.

C.A.G. Reply:  Thank you very much for your message.  We have taken on board your suggestions and will bring them up at the next committee meeting.  On the subject of politics, our position remains unchanged by the recent exchanges in the local press.  We are grateful for help from any political party and have indeed been supported, in differing ways, by 4 political parties, however we are not politically motivated and are purely interested in working for local people.  With regard to the trees, we have been unable to find out who is responsible for this, but have firmly put the ball in Crossrail's court, to prove that it is not their doing.

16 17/08/04 At 3.30pm today we were informed by a local resident that the Crossrail Consultation Unit has been relocated.  It is now situated outside the Co-Op Bank, bottom of Romford Market, by the copper pipes.  C.A.G.
15 15/08/04 After attending the meeting at Westminster with Crossrail, fellow residents and Mr Rosindell on Tuesday, I was left cold at the ruthlessness of Crossrail. After the lengthy debate over consultation (or lack of it) any question or point raised after that was answered with either 'That's not my department', 'I don't know about that', or 'Oh, I'll look into it'. Another popular phrase was 'It's a serious issue that we need to look at'. If there are so many serious issues that need addressing, then why on earth did they choose Romford? My only hope is that the response to the written questions, handed to Crossrail by yourselves (C.A.G.) are handed back with proper responses (a false hope I feel). RESIDENTS; PLEASE, turn up to the consultation unit on Friday and Saturday and make them work for their money. A very disappointing outcome by Crossrail. A very angry resident
14 15/08/04 I am now medically retired, but I worked at the Ilford Depot shed for 21 years as a Electrical/Mechanical Fitter, Charge-hand and as a Supervisor. I have been involved in all aspects of EMU maintenance and major overhauls including the wheel lathe. I feel to have something two to three times bigger than the Ilford Depot placed in the centre of a residential area is INSANE. Romford Station opened on the 20/06/1836 and the incline embankment between Chadwell Heath and Romford is as old. It was originally a two line track but later increased to four. Those who live with the embankment at the bottom of their garden (I live in Sheringham Avenue) would have noticed the increase in vibration since the freight trains have got heavier and now there's going to be more, and faster, passenger trains, will the embankment take any more before it to collapses like the one a few years ago.
Any one wanting to ask me any questions about the work, noise and conditions at Ilford Depot can do so.......sorry this was a bit long but I feel that we need as much information and help to fight this insane project.

C.A.G. Reply:  Thank you for this very informative message.  You have raised some very interesting points and I will e-mail you separately to discuss how you may be able to assist us with your knowledge of the local railway.

13 12/09/04 Now it seems, reading the latest news on the Serco Industrial News website, that when speaking at the London City of Commerce, our Mayor, Mr Livingstone, wants to bring Chinese companies over here to hurry up the building and tunnelling of this monster CROSSRAIL.  Livingstone is basing his idea on the Shanghai underground system that was built in three years .. YES THREE YEARS. Does this mean just the 'know how' or the workforce?  It has been said the project will bring specialist jobs to the area, I assumed for local people.  JUST THINK ABOUT IT.............

C.A.G. Reply: This is an interesting development considering the Round 2 Consultation Document states the 'creation of thousands of jobs during construction and operation of the railway'.  As you say, who for?

12 11/08/04 The thing that worries me is that, at the Romford Consultation Unit, very little information will be given out about the effects of the Romford development, and that all that will be available for local residents will be glossy brochures showing how wonderful the 'new and improved' station will be.  The same thing happened at the Liverpool Street consultation and I fear that this will undo all the work that you (C.A.G.) and other volunteers have done to inform people of the negative effects, of which there are so many.  It does not seem fair that your endless petitioning, press meetings and leaflet dropping could be made to seem meaningless.  It seems obvious to me, and I hope other Romford residents will agree, that you have put a lot of work into this, even going as far as to maintain that your campaign does not become political.  Is there nothing that can be done to ensure that Crossrail do not get away with this potential cover- up of the actual facts?

C.A.G. Reply: Yes indeed, it is very important that residents insist on being given information about the Depot and Tunnel as well as the station and services.  We have to be fully informed.  When looking at plans, make sure they are current plans as we believe the ones on show at the Liverpool Street concourse mobile unit, may have been outdated.  It is up to us to make sure there is no room for a 'cover up' by constantly asking for up to date information.

11 09/09/04 I don't think that many people really understand the extent of this project unless they attended the meeting at Crowlands School.  I was horrified at what I heard there.  The newspapers still refer to it as a 'depot' but those of us who were there know that it is so much more than a couple of sheds to repair trains at night! Unbelievably I have spoken to people that still don't know what Crossrail is all about. They need more information about what is really going to happen and how it will not just affect, but ruin their lives, and destroy this nice quiet residential area that we all value so much. Thanks to C.A.G!  It's just what we need to raise awareness and get them to support this important campaign.

C.A.G Reply:  Thank you for your comments.  It is true to say that there are still a large number of people who are unaware of the impact of the proposed Crossrail development in Romford.  We will do all we can to continue to highlight what the proposal will mean to the area.  Please keep spreading the word, as this makes YOU a valuable member of our team too.
