Crossrail to re-examine other depot options....

The Crossrail Action Groups appearance before the Commons Select Committee on Crossrail was due to happen in May but this has now been postponed until the end of June/ beginning of July, along with element of Havering Council’s petition dealing with depot issues.

In an e-mail received from Jonathon Baggs of Crossrail he says ‘CLRLL has monitored the recent changes in the use of existing railway depots within Greater London, including Old Oak Common, and is investigating whether these developments enable other sites to be considered as the location of Crossrail's permanent maintenance facility. That investigation is on-going, and - without wanting to raise expectations - we believe that it would be in everyone's interests if the petitions from within the London Borough of Havering's were split between 'depot' petitions and 'other' petitions’.  To this end the London Borough of Havering will begin their hearing before the Select Committee immediately after Easter on issues unrelated to the depot, with all depot issues being postponed in line with ours.

Although Jonathon Baggs hasn’t mentioned Ilford, we have heard through other authorities, that the option to use Ilford is also being re-examined.

This would seem to be a step in the right direction.  We know that CLRLL need to make cost cuts and with the estimated cost of building a new depot in Romford standing at £431m, it would seem that common sense has prevailed in them revisiting the idea of utilising existing facilities. COME ON CROSSRAIL – YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!!

Let us hope that Spitalfields recent ‘win’ over their tunnelling issues signal a new era for us all.

We will, of course, keep you updated on our ‘diary dates’ page, when we know the date of our hearing.
