Depot update...
Members of the Crossrail Action Group were due to meet with Mayor, Ken Livingstone, on 17th May. However on the Friday before the meeting was due to take place, the Mayors Office asked that the meeting be postponed as they had received news that CLRL were seriously looking into locating their depot elsewhere. The meeting will be rescheduled if the decision to use Romford remains unchanged.
We are very lucky in that the group has many valuable contacts and we have tried our utmost to find out just how serious CLRL are about relocating. Drawing all the replies from our contacts together and adding in what we have been told directly by Crossrail, the situation would appear to be as follows:
Crossrail are looking into the possibility of using a depot at Old Oak Common, near Paddington. In order for them to be able to use this depot, they need to negotiate with the current occupiers and relocate them, possibly to Northpole depot – which is in the same area but on the opposite side of the mainline. There is also some talk of addressing local residents concerns.
IF, (and that is big IF) all goes well, Romford MAY be reprieved.
HOWEVER, if the option to locate the depot at Old Oak Common proves unfeasible, then the Romford option will go ahead as planned but with some alterations.
It is much too soon to start celebrating yet but we have it confirmed by so many sources that this is not a face saving exercise by CLRL but a real attempt to locate the depot elsewhere, that we are hopeful for a good result for Romford. We hope to have more definite news one way or the other in the next few weeks and will keep you posted.
In the same week that we have heard all of this, the Crossrail Action Group has also been given a date to appear before the Crossrail Select Committee to present our petition. The date is 29th June but this is subject to possible change.
